Today, Tove Jansson is chiefly known for her Moomin books she wrote and illustrated from 1945 on. The Moomin comic strips she wrote and drew for the London evening News since 1954, however, are widely forgotten by Tove Jansson fans and comic readers alike.
During the fifties and sixties, the comic strip was quite successful, being translated in twenty languages. Around 1960, her brother Lars began to work on the strip, changing its attitude. He dismissed the dry humour that resembled that of the Moomin books for a more ironic appeal. After three episodes done by Tove and Lars together, Lars worked alone on the strip until 1975.
